Our History
Healing the Culture was incorporated in July 2003 as a national, non-profit educational organization dedicated to changing an unhealthy culture that has given rise to abortion, euthanasia, and other threats against human life and dignity.
Although its founding was recent, Healing the Culture teaches the Life Principles educational curriculum that was first introduced more than ten years ago by our leadership team, and which has been successfully presented to tens of thousands of people.
This methodology for teaching the public about pro-life issues was developed by Rev. Robert Spitzer in the early 1990s when he was teaching philosophy and ethics at Seattle University. Rev. Spitzer became involved in the public debate on abortion and euthanasia during ballot initiative campaigns in California and Washington. He recognized that, implicit in many of his opponents' arguments, were profoundly narrow and misguided concepts of freedom, happiness, success, quality of life, and suffering.
Rev. Spitzer's work led to the publication of his book on the Life Principles, entitled Healing the Culture: A Commonsense Philosophy of Happiness, Freedom, and the Life Issues. This volume contains the most comprehensive philosophy of the pro-life movement in print today and has sold nearly 15,000 copies. Cardinal Francis George of Chicago describes it as "An excellent resource for examining the life issues in their broadest and most profound context." Likewise, Professor Robert George of Princeton University writes, "This splendid book restores philosophy to its status as a practical art and science. It is both a guidebook for living a good and happy life, and a handbook for thinking through some of the most troubling issues affecting our society."
Healing the Culture was formed to expand the teaching of the Life Principles to the broadest possible audience. We accomplish this by providing training for professionals, retreat programs, a speaker's bureau, and educational resources, including video and audio learning systems.
